Application to the postdoctoral training program (fellowship) in medical informatics at the Laboratory of Computer Science (LCS) is by letter (via US mail, fax, or email) to Dr. William Lester. (See contact information below.) The letter should provide some detail on the applicant's background and experience in both computer science and medicine and his or her professional interests. Applications are accepted for consideration between September and February for admission to the program the following July.
The applicant should enclose a current resumé with the letter and request to have an official transcript sent from his or her medical school.
Three letters of reference from faculty who can best characterize the applicant's capabilities and experiences are required. These letters should be sent directly to Dr. Lester by the faculty members. In addition, it is important for prospective applicants to visit the laboratory for personal interviews with faculty members and to meet with current fellows.
The fellowship at the LCS is part of the Boston Program in Biomedical Informatics (BMI), and educational opportunities abound. Applicants are encouraged to explore all of the other fellowship opportunities in Boston and apply to those of interest. We would be happy to help you coordinate your visits to the various programs in Boston.
Applicants to the LCS fellowship should also consider applying simultaneously to the Master of Science Degree Program in Medical Informatics offered by the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences & Technology (HST). Tuition for the masters degree program is covered by the fellowship. Other graduate degree programs may also be of interest, especially the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Application to the BMI program is through Dr. Bob Greenes. To apply for a postdoctoral fellowship, please see the checklist below. Send your CV, academic transcripts, a brief (one page) statement of goals for BMI training and future career in this area, and details of your prior computer experiences. Also have 3 letters of recommendation sent to the attention of the Program Director, Research Training in Biomedical Informatics, as noted below. The above may be sent by email and/or fax although originals of transcripts and letters of recommendation should also be mailed. An interview/visit may be requested, and in some cases the GRE or other examination may be requested.
